Macheras - Fikardou
This memorable day will start with a visit to the Santa Thekla Monastery, a Nunnery founded by Saint Eleni (mother of Emperor Constantine). We will have a chance to wash our faces in the Holy Spring Water, said to help prevent eye and skin illnesses.
Travelling through pine-covered mountains, we reach the old village of Fikardou. This village has been declared an ancient site in order to preserve the remarkable woodwork and folk architecture of the 16th - 18th Century houses. In 1987, two of the restored houses received the prestigious Europa Nostra award.
After taking in the fabulous panoramic views from the highest peak of the Eastern Troodos Mountain Range, we will visit Macheras Monastery which is set in a picturesque valley in the Macheras Mountains. It was founded by two monks in 1148 after an Icon of the Virgin Mary was found in a nearby cave. The brotherhood is extremely devout and lives similarly to the Monastery of Mount Athos in Greece.
A delicious village ‘Meze' with wine and the special Cypriot Desert ‘Boureki' will be waiting for us in Maria's Restaurant in the village of Vavatsinia.
After our meal, we will stop in Lefkara village, famed for its silver jewellery and hand made lace as well as its amazing architecture.
We will stop in one of the restored village houses to taste Cypriot coffee and to shop.
Please note that modest dress is required when visiting Monasteries and Churches, i.e. no shorts or low-cut tops.
Lunch is included in the price.
